About International A-Level Law

International A-Level Law provides a comprehensive introduction to legal principles, institutions and reasoning. The syllabus covers the English legal system, criminal law, contract law, tort law and human rights law, developing students' ability to analyse legal problems, construct legal arguments and evaluate the effectiveness of legal rules and institutions.

Assessment is through written examination papers requiring case analysis, legal problem-solving and extended essay writing. Students learn to apply legal principles to factual scenarios, reference relevant cases and statutes, and evaluate legal rules from multiple perspectives. The modular structure allows students to sit papers across multiple examination sessions.

International A-Level Law is excellent preparation for university law degrees and is also valued for applications to politics, international relations, criminology and business. It develops critical thinking, analytical reasoning and the ability to construct persuasive arguments based on evidence and authority.

Study Tips for Law

  • Learn key cases with their names, facts, legal principles and judgements. International A-Level Law examiners reward specific case references, not vague descriptions of legal concepts.
  • Practice legal problem-solving using the IRAC method: Identify the issue, state the Rule, Apply the rule to the facts, and reach a Conclusion.
  • Create revision cards for each area of law, listing the key statutes, cases and legal principles you need to know.
  • Read about current legal debates and reforms, as evaluation questions may ask you to assess whether existing laws are effective or need changing.

Exam Tips for International A-Level Law

  • In problem-solving questions, identify all relevant legal issues before starting to write. A structured, systematic approach earns more marks than a disorganised response.
  • Reference cases and statutes by name. Simply describing a legal principle without citing its authority will not earn full marks at International A-Level.
  • In essay questions, present multiple viewpoints and reach a well-reasoned conclusion. One-sided arguments do not demonstrate the evaluative skills required for top grades.
